Breaking: Tribunal dismisses Faleke’s petition against Gov. Bello’s election
The Kogi State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on Monday ruled that Hon. James Faleke has no locus stand to file any petition against the election of Yahaya Bello as Governor of Kogi State.
The Tribunal, therefore, dismissed Faleke’s petition against Bello.
Faleke, the running mate of the initial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Abubakar Audu, had gone to the Tribunal seeking his declaration as the valid candidate of the party for the election and his declaration as Governor.
Faleke said with the death of Audu on the day the results of the initial election was being announced, he should have stepped into the shoes of Audu.

CBN Approves N20 Billion Bailout For Kogi
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has approved N20 billion as bailout for the Kogi Government.
The state governor, Yahaya Bello, announced this on Sunday in Lokoja while addressing a rally held by organised labour to mark this year’s May Day celebration.
Mr. Bello explained that the N20 billion was the first tranche of the N50 billion applied for to clear salary arrears of the state and local government workers.
He blamed the delay in the release of the fund on the last administration, saying that the application submitted by his predecessor was shoddily done and fraught with irregularities.
“We had to start from scratch. We are glad to announce that our efforts have paid off. This week, we received approval to draw down on the first tranche of our Bailout Funds from the Federal Government.

Why I’m Contesting Kogi Gov Election Outcome — Wada
The immediate past Governor of Kogi
State, Idris Wada, has said he is not seeking to inherit the votes of
Prince Abubakar Audu, the late All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate
in the November 21, 2015 governorship election.
Wada said rather, he was contesting the results of the governorship
election because of alleged irregularities, noting that it was
unfortunate that the APC flag-bearer, Audu, died. Wada made the
assertion while adopting his petition before the Kogi Governorship
Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja.
Under cross examination by counsel to Independent National
Electoral Commission, INEC, Governor Yahaya Bello and APC, Wada said
though he was deeply saddened by the death of his long time friend, he
was of the opinion that Audu’s votes were voided by his death and could
not be inherited by anyone.
In a related development, a forensic analyst, Mr. Samuel Oduntan,
also testified before the tribunal, saying he was the leader of the team
that carried out forensic examination of the election documents and
that they discovered various irregularities.

Clear Conscience Fears No Evil!, Kogi APC Chairman Replies Yahaya Bello
Recent events in the state as it
concerns the reactions of the state governor and his men over the All
Progressives Congress, APC, state executives’ meeting which was recently
held expressing discontent over the administration of Alhaji Yahaya
Bello has vindicated me.
Nobody from the governor’s camp had
objectively countered our position, and the claim by Alhaji Yahaya Bello
that I am fighting him because of his acclaimed brother Alhaji Momoh
Jimoh Lawal who was removed as speaker of the state assembly is not only
laughable but ridiculous, his claim had further proved that he, Alhaji
Yahaya Bello has been fuelling the state house of Assembly quagmire.
The fact remains that the speaker
was never impeached or removed because five (5) can never be greater
than fifteen (15). It is ridiculous that after the National Assembly’s
decision to take over Kogi State House of Assembly that he still claims
the speaker was removed, this is impunity at its peak. If I may have to
fight him, I would have done so as at when he openly worked against the
re-election of his own party men including Senator Mohammed Salami
Ohiare and Hon Abdullahi Bello to support the PDP, but I never did
because I am not a leader who believes in ethnic and clanish sentiments.
Alhaji Yahaya Bello claims to be
running an all inclusive government when members of his own political
party APC who worked tirelessly for the victory he is enjoying today are
not involved in the act of governance. He claims to be running a unity
Government when the votes that brought you into lugard house was won by
APC and not that of UNITY PARTY.

Why We Couldn’t Save Under Jonathan – Okonjo-Iweala
Onetime Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy,
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said governors were the reason former
President, Goodluck Jonathan, could not save for the future.
Okonjo-Iweala in an interview with Le Monde
said “some economists are very concerned for Nigeria, which could
greatly suffer from the fall in oil prices. Others say the contrary,
that its economy is strong enough to turn the corner.
“Both are
right. But one thing saddens me. When I was finance minister the first
time, the volatility of oil prices, and therefore state resources, cost
at least three points of growth in the country.
“We
then established a stabilisation mechanism and opened an account for
the oil surplus, which posted up to $22 billion. In 2008, when prices
fell from 148 to $38 a barrel, no one had heard of Nigeria because the
country was able to tap into this fund. And that, I am very proud [of].
“When
I returned to the department in 2011, there remained only $4 billion on
this account while the price of oil was very high! I tried again to put
money aside. The president agreed, but the governors did not accept.
“I
suffered a lot of attacks from them and now that the country would
really need this account, these same people accuse me of not having
saved. If Nigeria had been more careful, we would not be here today. It
hurts me. We have the mechanism, we had the experience, but we were
prevented to act.”

BOKO-HARAM SURRENDERS
Food embargo as a lethal weapon of war, is working in
Nigeria’s north east, where hungry militants are fast losing the appetite to
continue their war of attrition against Nigeria.
Scores of emaciated-looking Boko Haram members begging for
food have surrendered in northeast Nigeria, the military and a civilian
self-defense fighter said Wednesday.
Seventy-six people including children and women gave
themselves up to soldiers last Saturday in Gwoza, about 100 kilometers (60
miles) southeast of Maiduguri, according to a senior officer.
All are being detained at military headquarters in Maiduguri,
the birthplace of Boko Haram and currently the command center of the war
against the Islamic extremists, according to the officer. He insisted on
anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists.
The detainees said many more fighters want to surrender, a
self-defense civilian fighter who helped escort them to Maiduguri revealed
today.
Food shortages could indicate that Nigeria’s military is
succeeding in choking supply routes of the Islamic extremists who have taken
their fight across Nigeria’s borders. Some 20,000 people have died in the
6-year-old uprising. Boko Haram was declared the deadliest of all terror groups
in 2014, surpassing the Islamic State group to which it declared allegiance
last year.
Nigeria’s military reported that dozens of Boko Haram
fighters were surrendering in September and October last year. It promised
those who give themselves up voluntarily that they will be rehabilitated
through a de-radicalization program.
In the 10 months since he took office promising to halt the
insurgency, President Muhammadu Buhari has replaced the leadership of the
military, moved the headquarters for the fight from the distant capital, Abuja,
to the heart of the northeastern insurgency and resupplied soldiers.
The military has driven the insurgents from the towns and
villages where they had set up an Islamic caliphate but Boko Haram has returned
to hit-and-run tactics and suicide bombings.
